Mounting projects, no ambition

I have been completely exhausted this week for some reason and I can't seem to muster up the energy to do anything productive. I have some knitting custom orders that I need to finish up ASAP, a few bloggy things that need to get done, and SO MUCH WORK for the introduction of my knits in a little over a month. On top of all that, I'm going to need to start packing soon so that when I move at the end of August I'll have everything. It's insanity. I'll get it all done, but I'm going to need to find energy somewhere!

How have all of you been? I really feel like I've been so absent this week. Such a slacker! I feel like I've been endlessly busy but I have nothing to show for my work. I spent a few hours on Wednesday night helping my mom with some fundraising she needs to do. She runs for an organization called Chances for Children and is trying to raise $1000 for them. I tied cute "thank you" tags that I made onto 100 tootsie pops with sweet little bows. They look adorable but it took FOREVER. If you'd like to donate to my mama and help her (by contributing to this INCREDIBLE organization) click here.

I've also been working on making some Sunday Morning Sugar flyers that I can hang up around town (in coffee shops and whatnot). They're going to be so cute. I'll make a pdf version of them and if you'd like, I'll send it to you so you can hang one around your town too!

Today I left work a little early, snagged some super fine flour, and set to work making some pasta.

I kneaded it for a while (man alive! You have to be seriously buff to make pasta)...

Then I started rolling it...

Then my dad helped me cut it...

And finally we hung it up on my brand new pasta rack to dry!

I cooked up my first batch and oh sweet baby jesus.... it is GOLD. I am officially addicted to making pasta. I CAN'T BE STOPPED! Expect to see wayyy too many posts about different kinds of pasta I create. Here's a picture of it cooked...

Before I head off to my craft cave for the night, I wanted to give a shout out to Justine and say thank you for the mention on her blog. So sweet :). I also want to say hello to my new followers (many of whom found me through Justine!)

Hi Hi New Followers!!!

I know I mention this a lot, but I really cannot get over the fact that 53 of you have hit that "follow" button. I am so flattered that so many of you want to read what I have to say and that I have so many wonderful readers who stop by to say hello and give me feedback. I appreciate you all so much. I'm being redundant. When I hit 100 followers I'm going to host a fun giveaway to show my appreciation. So if you read and don't "follow" yet, jump on the bandwagon!

Last night I spent some time making forms for my etsy bookkeeping and they are SOO cute. I still have some things to tweak, but I'm so excited about it. I'm also proud of myself because I really want to keep track of my spending for this little hobby. I feel so responsible :).

Before I forget, I want to mention that my friend Megan opened up an Etsy shop recently. She makes cute hair accessories. You can check them out here.

I'm trying to find the time to put together a tutorial for you so HOPEFULLY I can get that to you by the end of the week. If not, I am determined to put it up next week. I am really backed up on knitting orders so a lot of my time is going towards filling those. I hate to leave you empty handed two days in a row, but I'm just feeling so uninspired. I suppose I could take this opportunity to ask you what you like/dislike about Sunday Morning Sugar. Is there something you'd like to see more of? Something I should never do again? I'd love your feedback. As always, if you don't feel comfortable leaving it in a comment, you can leave it anonymously on my formspring.

On a bit of a mission

Hello world,

(we heart it)

This past week has been a whirlwind (I think I say that a lot. Maybe most of my weeks are whirlwinds?) I have had a LOT of my mind and I'm headed towards making a couple HUGE decisions that are going to really change the direction my life is heading in right now. It's really rather terrifying being a young person. There is so much pressure surrounding everything you do. Sometimes it's pretty overwhelming. Regardless, I've been pretty scattered and journaling about a billions pages a day so I can sort my thoughts out. So much going on!
I was going to share about some of them but I realized that the tone I like to keep on this blog would be really different if I started making things TOO personal. I'm big on privacy (it may not seem like it) and I like to keep a distinct line between appropriate sharing and inappropriate venting on here.

On a more positive (less crazy) note, I have been slowly (but surely) scratching things off of my to-do list. It feels SO good. Tonight I'll be finished with my middle school blog journal, and I'm going to clean my room because it is a DISASTER. I don't have anything fabulous or exciting to share today (my apologies) but I'll be back tomorrow with something better. Blame it on all these decisions I have to make right now!

This is my 255th post

That seems like kind of a big deal for some reason. Also, 49 more followers until my triple digit giveaway so put my little button in your sidebar if you want free stuff!

Last week I made the Mango Ginger Tofu that I've been dreaming about for months. It looked beautiful. Smelled delicious, but failed to deliver in the taste department for me. More on that after the pictures.

If you want the recipe, you can either buy the book Vegan for a Vengeance, or you can look below. Even though I wasn't a fan of this particular recipe, I would still totally suggest that you buy the book. Everything else I've made from it has become an instant favorite. I'm not sure if I put too much sauce on the tofu or if I'm just not as big of a fan of mango as I thought I was, but I couldn't really eat much of it. So disappointing :(. If you decide to give it a try, let me know if it turns out better for you. All the reviews said it was the most delicious thing ever so I had high hopes, maybe someone else will have better luck.

I'm so silly, I keep forgetting to finish my posts. I'm really scattered recently. Here's the recipe :).
Equipment:
2 9x13 baking pans or 1 huge baking pan

a blender

medium sauce pot with a cover that fits

Ingredients
For the marinade:
3 cloves garlic
1 jalepeno, seeded and chopped
1/4 cup fresh ginger, roughly chopped
2 teaspoons peanut oil or veg oil
2 large mangos, roughly chopped (note: you will need one more mango when cooking the tofu, see below)
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1 cup white cooking wine (or vegetable broth)
fresh black pepper to taste
dash of salt
1/4 teaspoon allspice
2 tablespoon rice vinegar (use apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar if you dont have rice)
juice of two limes
1 cup orange juice

Ingredients for the tofu

2 blocks tofu extra firm tofu, drained and pressed
1 mango, sliced in long thin slices
1 red pepper, seeded and cut in long thin slices

Directions
Make the marinade
In a medium sauce pan, heat the oil, add garlic, ginger and jalepeno, saute on medium heat 7 minutes, being careful not to burn the garlic. Add 2 chopped mangos and saute 5 minutes

Add pure maple syrup and wine, cover and simmer 35 minutes; Uncover and simmer 5 more minutes.

Add orange juice, vinegar, lime, black pepper, allspice and salt; Add mixture to blender, puree until smooth.

Prepare the tofu
Cut tofu blocks into 8 slabs each. Place tofu in marinade in a sealable plastic bag or tupperware. Marinate in the fridge for an hour and up to overnight.

Preheat oven to 375

Reserve about half of the marinate. Lay marinated tofu in a single layer in baking pan. Cook for 20 minutes. Flip tofu over and add more marinade. Dredge peppers and sliced mangos in marinade and add them to pan. Cook another 15 minutes.

Heat up remaining marinade in a sauce pan and put in a bowl on the table (or floor, where ever you're eating) so guests (or room mates, or who ever is eating) can pour it over the tofu. Serve over jasmine rice, with a steamed vegetable, such as aspararus or broccoli.

I also wanted to show you these bad boys...

I bought them from Courtney a while ago and took pictures excitedly to share with you all, but I haven't had a chance to post them to I decided to tack them on to this post! I love them and I can't wait to hang them in my new place.

That's all I have for today. See you tomorrow!

P.S.
I've gotten some intriguing questions on my formspring in the past few days and I thought I post about it since I think it's so fun. Ask me anything! I'd love to answer any questions you may have :).

No Makeup Challenge

I've been seeing this "no makeup challenge" around the blog world, here and here and I thought it would be a lot of fun to participate. Those who know me, know I'm no stranger to going without makeup. As a matter of fact, I did a post like this a while ago right here. Regardless, I think it's awesome to show you naked face so here's my new, no-makeup shot. (and your quote because hey! It's Sunday)

Things to look forward to this week:

So You Think You Can Dance

Ah, on to the second half of day two. If you've been following, you may notice that I always mention Kent Boyd from So You Think You Can Dance. Well, the reason for my California excursion (as I also mentioned) was to watch a taping of the show and to see Kent dance. One of my grandma's old students works for Fox so she got us tickets to the show as well as VIP passes.

She picked us up from the hotel and drove us to CBS studios where the show is taped.

We hung out in the green room and snacked a bit before we needed to take our seats. I met some of the girls from Glee (which I don't watch. I suppose I should start?).

(how great is her headband?)

Anyways, I don't have any pictures from inside the show (you'll have to tune into Fox for next week's episode to see what I'm talkin about) but the dances were fabulous. The studio was a lot smaller than it looks on TV but everything else was pretty much how I thought it would be. Cat Deely was so beautiful and friendly, the dancers were goofy both on and off camera, and from the audience, it looked like the show went very smoothly. But being an ex-dancer, I know that things backstage would tell a different tale.

After the show, we went backstage and waited for the dancers to talk to the press. My mom got SO excited (I've never seen her so excited. It was like she was 4 and mickey mouse knocked on her door to say what's up?) and took about a million pictures. She doesn't read this which is good because she said "I know you'll use these pictures on your blog" and now I am... Thanks mama for being a crazy person so I didn't have to do it :).

When the fanfare died down, we walked to the lot and ran into Mia Michaels. She talked to us about her opinions regarding Kent in the show and commended my grandma for the training she provided to him. We snapped a few photos with her and then left to grab some dinner. It was delicious and wonderful. I had a blast spending time with my mom, grandma, and Susie. There aren't any pictures of us all together otherwise I'd share.

I just wanted to say thanks again to Susie for hooking us up. It was a great week!! Oh! And I can't forget my obligatory, touristy, Rodeo drive photo op.

And that's where my vacation photos come to an end.

I'm excited to get back to Phoenix. I have some ideas for things for my shop and I'm ready to sketch them and get to work on making them a reality. I may be too scattered to devote my shop entirely to knits :). But I suppose that's the beauty of Etsy. I do what I want!!

See you tomorrow for yo' suga'

Last day of Vacation

I'm at my aunt's house on the last day of vacation and I can't wait to get back to phoenix. Only another month(ish) till I get to go back to my beloved Chicago :)!! Until then I'll be saving every penny that comes my way so I'll be able to afford some fun stuff for my new apartment. You know, like a bed and a bookshelf! Anyways, I want to share my vacation with you but I'll share it in parts since that's less image heavy.

So here's day one:

My grandma flew in from Ohio on Monday and early Tuesday morning we saddled up the car and started our drive to beautiful West Hollywood. I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned this before, but I absolutely love California. I would love to live there someday.

We got there in the afternoon, checked into our hotel, and spent a few hours lounging by the pool. After lunch (by the pool), we showered, changed, and took a stroll down Melrose. Every two seconds I saw something that caught my eye and was almost giddy with excitement. I love how colorful everything is and the typography and design on the street and in the buildings was KILLING ME. It was fantastic.

We ended up at the Farmer's Market for dinner and had a delicious fondue. Then we sauntered back to the hotel while window shopping the other side of the street. It was great :).

Day Two:
We woke up bright and early and headed over to Urth Cafe for some breakfast.

I got banana nut oatmeal and was in heaven. I'm not much of an oatmeal gal but this was an exception. Who new oats could be so delicious?!

After breakfast, we hurried off to Venice beach for a few hours. I am obsessed with the beach. I honestly cannot get enough. Even though it was cloudy and muggy, I still had a wonderful time reading my vogue and shuffling my toes in the sand.

That's where I stop sharing because the second half of day two deserves its own post. I'll be back tomorrow with the continuation of my little vacation story.

How have things been for all of you? I would say I missed you while I was away, but since I brought my computer I guess I wasn't really "away".

xoxo

P.S.

I have 50 followers?! Someone pinch me. I must be dreaming. Thank you all so much and WELCOME! If you're new, leave a comment and say hello :). I love hearing from you.

Forage

Hello! I'm taking a mini break from my vacation so bring you my second feature. This week, I asked Shauna and Stephen to share their story. Their most recent project is a collection of fabulous bow ties, but you may know them better as the people who brought you the original mustache on a stick! Read on, these people are seriously wonderful.

What is your name and where can we find you online (blog/twitter/website/etc)?

What do you do for a living?
we make lots of stuff.

Have you always known that this is the career you wanted to have?  If not, tell me how you got into it.
four years ago we had a booth at the renegade craft fair just because we wanted to see if we could make enough money for a new computer. we bought a brand new mac the next day and the rest is history.

Did you go to college to further your education in this field or did you gain your experience in another way?
we both have BFA's from the kansas city art institute and MFA's from cranbrook academy of art. stephen's background is in sculpture and shauna's in is printmaking and museum studies.

Do people generally support you or have you run into people who think you’re crazy to not have a “secure” desk job?
we both have day jobs... that's what keeps "something's hiding in here" as an evolving project. we make most of our living on our hand made goods, but we have a safety net. this way, we never feel nervous taking a risk to try something new, we never wanted it to be a business - it's our fun!

What is your favorite part about your unconventional career?
we can do what ever we want... wood rings one day, mustaches in a stick the next and bow ties today. who knows what we'll be up to tomorrow - that's the very best part.

Finally, do you have any advice to entrepreneurs or budding artists who want to make their craft a career?
keep pushing forward!!! as long as your most recent project makes your last one look like crap - you're on the right track. everyday is a chance to make something more amazing than you did yesterday.

Still on Vacation

I still don't have the patience to put up the pictures from my vacation (I'm still on it! I'm allowed to relax) but I'll share another picture of myself enjoying a trip. I had a blasty blast today, I can't wait to tell you all about it.

Now it's back to watching the creepy guy across the street strut around naked on his patio. Seriously, who does that?

Learning how to crochet...

Yesterday I spent a few hours trying to knock out one of my 20 before 20 goals. I was feeling particularly patient and I've been a little bit obsessed with the idea of knitting (or crocheting) a blanket recently so I figured I may as well learn how to make granny squares so that someday I could make a granny square blanket!!

After learning how to make a foundation chain, I used this video to learn how to single crochet.

MASTERED!
(I didn't take a picture of this. I guess I didn't think it was an accomplishment?)

Next, I moved along to this video to learn how to double crochet.

GOT IT!

Finally, I used a tutorial from my friend Lindsay's blog to start on my very first granny square.

Here's what I have so far...

What I learned about teaching yourself to crochet (this goes for knitting as well):
1) BE PATIENT!
2) Use a needle or hook in a larger gauge because working with a smaller hook or needle (like I did) can be tough. You lose track of stitches and if you're just learning, that's no good.
3) If you already know how to knit or crochet, it seems like it's easier to learn how to do the other one.

Today I'm going to head to Joanns and get some different sized crochet hooks so I can play with them on my vacation. Say whaaat?! Vacation? That's right kids, I'm headed to california to go to a taping of So You Think You Can Dance. You may remember that my grandma has owned a dance studio in Ohio for 50 years (see here, here, and here) and that one of her dancers is currently on the show. Hey there Kent Boyd! I'm really excited to go to California and if there are any stores or restaurants I shouldn't miss while I'm in LA, let me know! I'm more than content just relaxing on the beach but I'd love to do some fun shopping.

Finally, I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has stopped by my shop and/or promoted me this week. It honestly means the world to me (does the excitement of selling handmade goods ever wear off? I hope not) and I can never thank you enough. You are all SO wonderful. Thank you so much to my new readers and my readers who have been around since the very beginning almost a year ago now! I'm almost at 50 followers which means halfway to my triple digit giveaway! So if you read and don't follow yet, hit that little button :)!'

Sighhhhhh, it's Sunday

Sundays are so relaxing. They've always been my favorite day of the week because it's the day when everything moves in slow motion. I'm usually terrible at relaxing, but I'm okay with it on Sunday. I'm off to read, swim, and knit but not before I leave you with a quote and a picture.

Jacques and Jill!!!

My store's official opening will be on September first, but to accompany the announcement of my new store name (quite the upgrade from Maloriii), I figured I'd put up a batch of fun accessories that have been keeping me busy this past week.

I made myself a couple pairs and I've been wearing them every day. They're adorable! The first five people who buy a pair of earrings will receive a free surprise with their purchase.

Please stop by my new store and take a look around!

Baking and Business

Hello world,

Today I took the day off of work and got a lot done. It was really refreshing to have a day to myself and I took full advantage of it. Let's break it down :)

I am going to knit his scarf and her hat.

I saw despicable me this morning and it was FABULOUS. I went with my brothers and we were basically the only ones in the theater (a family with three kids was there as well). I am certain that I enjoyed the movie about a billion times more than any of the kids who were there. It is hilarious. I can't wait to own it. Everyone should go see it ASAP!

When we got home, I finished knitting an adorable child's hat for my shop. It has a LOT of color, which usually scares me, but I think it turned out pretty cute!

Next, I baked what appear to be some DELICIOUS brownies. I had all the fixins and was armed with my hummingbird bakery cookbook. I have not tried them yet (waiting until after dinner) so I'll let you know how they turned out tomorrow.

Update: BEST BROWNIES EVER! SUCCESS!

As soon as I finished the brownies, I set to work on some Lasagna for dinner. I used my Aunt's award winning recipe (yes, she actually won an award for it) and it's in the oven as we speak. I've had this before, so I can tell you with confidence that it's delicious. Here's the recipe:

9 Lasagna Noodles (8oz)
2 (15 oz.) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
Nonstick spray coating
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 lg. jar of spaghetti sauce
1 (6oz) container low fat cottage cheese
1 (4oz) package reduced-fat cream cheese
1/2 cup light dairy sour cream

Cook noodles, drain. Mash one can of beans; set aside. Spray large skillet with non-stick cooking spray; add onion and garlic. Cook and stir over medium heat until tender, but not brown. Add mashed beans, unmashed beans, and suace; heat through.
In large mixing bowl, combine cottage cheese, cream cheese, and sour cream; set aside.
Spray 3 qt. rectangular baking dish with nonstick spray. Arrange 3 noodles in dish. Top with 1/3 of bean mixture. Spread with 1/3 of cheese mixture. Repeat layers, ending with bean and remaining cheese mixture. Bake covered in a 350 degree oven for 40-45 minutes or until heated through. Makes 8 main-dish servings. Low in calories and fat. Excellent!!

After I threw that delicious lasagna in the oven, I discovered that my business cards had arrived. I AM THRILLED! Look how perfect they are!

After dinner, I'm going to edit some photos for my mini shop update this Saturday. I'm really excited for it and you should be too!! I'm going to donate $.50 from each sale to Team Sole Sisters. My mom is a part of this running group and the money raised goes to a great organization. Read about it if you have the time. If you'd like to donate on your own, my mom's name is Kim Ungvarsky. Please donate to her account so she can reach her fundraising goal.

WOW this was a long post. I'll let you go you.

July 14, 2010

Hey there Wednesday

Hellllllooooo!!

I'm working on some fun accessories for the shop. I am DETERMINED to do a mini mid-summer post THIS SATURDAY! I am really excited about this :). You should be too!!!

As promised, I wanted to share more of my weekend with you today.
First:
I tried (and FAILED) to make some blondies. I left them in the oven too long and they burnt :(. Here's a picture of my disappointing white chocolate treat. Luckily, I have enough ingredients left over to try again :). Anyone who has made brownies from scratch before, do you have any tips? I'd love to hear them!

(sad little blondies)

Second:
Yesterday I wore one of my new dresses. The only people here to take pictures for me are boys and they dread it. Thus, when I finally pry them off the couch with bribes about what I'll give them if they snap a few pictures of me, I end up in front of ugly backgrounds. Ignore that please.

dress: Trina Turk
shoes: gilt

Finally:

I used to put blogs I read daily on my bookmarks toolbar. Needless to say, it has gotten a bit out of control (I ran out of room on the toolbar itself months ago and had to use a little pulldown menu to find the rest of my daily reads). It was only getting worse because I kept finding all these amazing blogs that I wanted and NEEDED to keep up with. So I finally gave it... I deleted all my bookmarks off of the toolbar insanity and gave in to using my google reader. I have to say, I don't hate it! I actually am really excited that I can keep up with all of the wonderful blogs out there whether or not they fit on my toolbar. If you don't use it yet, I would definitely recommend giving it a try!

I think I may go see Despicable Me tonight. I AM PUMPED!

First Feature!!!

Good morning!! I wanted to get this post up before I left for work because I'm so so so excited about it. This is my very first artist feature, and it's good stuff. I asked Miss. Courtney Bruesch if she would help me out because she has been endlessly helpful to me. She's very knowledgeable (about pretty much everything. I can't even describe) and friendly and her blog is so cute. When I approached her about being a part of my feature she was extremely supportive and gave me some AMAZING responses. If you're an art student, this kind of information is gold. Read on to learn more about Courtney!

What is your name and where can we find you online (blog/twitter/website/etc)?

Courtney Bruesch

Website: http://courtneybruesch.com/

Blog: http://youwillwontyou.blogspot.com/

Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/courtneybrueschphotography/

What do you do for a living?

I am a professional commercial photographer and graphic designer. I am the owner of Courtney Bruesch Photography+Design for six years now. I have had photographs published in magazines, made into posters for in-store displays, used in e-mail blasts and for the web. I have photographed for companies such as Ace Hardware, NHL, Limited Too/Justice and Payless Shoes.

Have you always known that this is the career you wanted to have?

I always knew that photography would be the only path for me to take. I am never without a camera! I graduated High School early so that I could start my college career. I only applied to one college (Columbia College Chicago, which is second only to New York’s School of Photography) and had the privilege of both taking classes there and working there as a teacher’s assistant and darkroom lab technician. I can’t see myself doing anything other then photography and design for a career.

Did you go to college to further your education or did you gain your experience from another way?

I think that this was partially answered in the last question but let me flesh it out a little more. There is a lot of technical know- how to photography. It is not always just about pretty photos but how you get to that point. ISO/ASA, Shutter Speed, strobes, slaves, flashes, props and lots of numbers are just part of what goes into a photograph. Then there is always post-production; film processing, image editing, etc.

Once you know how to make great photograph or successful design there is the business and branding side of an artist as a commodity; something I think not every artist thinks about in a commercial sense. You really have to if you want to make a living from your art, I was lucky enough that my college has a program for Fine Art as well as Commercial Artists. I received a BFA (with honors) in Photography.

Do people generally support you or have you run into people who think you’re crazy to not have a “secure” desk job?

As times get harder more and more of my family and friends worry about what I am going to do for the rest of my life. Art seems to be one of the first casualties in a slow economy. It is becoming more and more difficult to find freelance work. Commercial photo studios are going out of business like never before and the market is flooded with professional freelancers; not to mention the people who fancy themselves a professional photographer because they have a digital camera.

For me, life is not about making more money then the next person; I never wanted that kind of life. I simply want to have an artistic career that affords me the luxury of paying my bills- anything else would be just lovely though.

What is your favorite part about your unconventional career?

My favorite part of my career is working out the challenges that projects come with. I really love photography because it is part science and part art. No project is exactly the same and that makes it a very rewarding career.

I also love that I essentially sent my own hours. This is a double-edged sword though because when you set your own hours you often works well past them. It is easy to get into a routine of working 12 hour days!

Finally, do you have any advice to entrepreneurs or budding artists who want to make their craft a career?

From my experience here are some things to keep in mind when making the transition from art student to artist:

Be prepared and committed to use all of your time and money to pursue it.

Please have PROFESSIONAL portfolio. If you are not 100% committed to the work in your portfolio leave it out.

Dress properly for an interview; yes we are all artists here but no one will hire or book you if you look disheveled. I don’t like it either but it is the way the business world works.

Don’t get hung up not booking a job.

Remember that you are not longer in high school and the art world is very small…I think we all know what that means.

Try to read ‘Art and Fear’ by David Bayles and Ted Orland at least once a year. It is a very inspiring book that discusses making art after being an art student.
